Today I started my transition away from document review, and away from the law. I am sure that friends and family will be aghast and perhaps dissapointed, but the truth is that I knew by the start of my 3L year that I did not find legal work personally satisfying.
My venture into the legal world came at great cost -- four and a half years and tens of thousands of dollars of debt. And I will leave it all behind, because future misery in a profession I care little for is not worth staying in because of the sunk costs.
If all goes according to plan, I will be reviewing documents for another year, and then finding a job in a field related to my undergraduate degree.

I stumbled upon your blog while doing some research. I do not know your personal history, but I do wonder why you have chosen to leave the legal profession. Are you burned out? Burnout is temporary. If you have covered this topic in prior posts, please forgive me for asking.

I have chosen to leave the legal profession because (1) I hate the paperwork (2) I don't care to have to market my services. A former boss of mine who had practiced for 15 years said that half of all private practice was rainmaking for the firm, something I don't want to do.
I wish it was as simple as 'burnout', but its not. Law just isn't for me.

I would like to say where I am going, but in the interests of remaining anonymous, I prefer not to disclose any specifics. I will keep you all posted though when I accomplish certain goals. Look for a post next week!

I've found some success with call backs by leaving the JD off my resume. To account for my time, I listed the place where I worked part time.
I actually am getting ready to take on a non-legal (well kind of non-legal) job as well stateofbeasley. I'm a Nova grad that moved down to Washington DC and like you, during 3L year I decided that law just wasn't for me. After a 2-3 month job search I landed a job at securities firm for a compliance analyst position (strangely enough my JD helped me get an interview and the job). Pay isn't great to start but there's tons of opportunities to grow with the company and it's not doc review. I wish you the best of luck with your career change!
